OUT OF FOCUS

Covid & the arts

OUT OF FOCUS is a 47-minute documentary made during and after the first lockdown/corona crisis in 2020. Under the motto “travel as little as possible and stay close to home,” I filmed and spoke with artists, musicians, writers, and dancers living and working in The Hague to explore what the crisis means to them.

Museums and theaters are closed; life seemed to come to a standstill for a moment and continued online. How do visual artists such as Philip Akkerman, Nishiko, or Charlotte van Winden, and musicians from the Orchestra of the 18th Century respond to this new situation? Some artists, including Anne Fehres and Esther Hovers, actually created new work directly related to the corona crisis. Choreographer Sol Léon, together with Paul Lightfoot, was to bid farewell to the Nederlands Dans Theater with a special series of performances, and made a film ‘out of necessity’ because theaters across Europe closed their doors. Writer Christiaan Weijts and visual artist Yuri Veerman respond in their own way to the consequences of the crisis on the cultural sector and the society we create together, and which we might, as a result of the crisis, reshape. Dancers Poernima Gobardhan and Alice Godfrey long for only one thing: to dance again as soon as possible.
